Twenty years after the Einstein Centennial, a twelve-foot version of the Einstein Monument was dedicated on December 8, 1999 on the grounds of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Jerusalem. The monument fulfills Berkss original dream that the Einstein Monument would find home in Israel. The star chart at Einsteins feet displays the precise position of the Sun, the Moon, the stars, and other celestial objects at midnight of May 14, 1948, the birth date of the State of Israel. Thoroughly trained and disciplined in all aspect of the visual arts, Robert Berks's primary career choice has been to create for future generations a visual record in sculpture of people who have shaped our time. Berks gained international recognition in 1952 when his sculptured bust of Dr. Chaim Weizmann was chosen as the definitive portrait of the late statesman-scientist. In the course of his career as a portraitist, Berks has created fourteen monumental works and more than three hundred portraits of individuals in public and private life. They cover a wide range of human achievement: science; government and politics; art and entertainment; labor and industry; humanitarianism. |
